While the travels of John of Plano Carpini, William of Rubruck, and others are often called works of travel literature, it becomes more and more clear that Carpini had a different agenda. John of Plano Carpini’s Ystoria Mongalorum should be understood not as a simple travelogue, but as the first in-depth European structured report on the Mongol war machine. Commissioned by Pope Innocent IV after the Mongol attacks on Eastern Europe, the expedition served as a strategic reconnaissance to a large extent. In this study I will analyze Carpini’s text through a dual lens: a military framework, which dissects the Mongol military power structure into ideological, material, and human compartments, and a new historicist approach that treats the report as a cultural artifact, which addresses Latin Christendom’s strategic fears. I will analyze and systematically juxtapose Carpini’s observations with sources from Persia and China. Through such a Eurasian comparison, Carpini’s main insights become more visible: the nerge hunt as military training, the decimal command structure, draconian discipline under the Yasa, and the universalist ideology of the emerging Mongol Empire. These outside impressions are then compared to internal evidence from the Mongol realm. My paper concludes that Carpini produced a functionally structured and accurate analysis of the Mongol military danger, which demonstrates an exceptionally deep understanding of the integrated systems behind the Mongol onslaught.
