Sŏkkuram is primarily a cave sanctuary, not simply a shrine housing a Buddha image. Although Korea rarely built cave temples, the Silla Buddhists deliberately created an artificial cave, demonstrating the symbolic importance they attached to the cave form itself. The idea of sacred caves is traced back to ancient India, where it symbolized a secret, primordial realm containing ultimate reality. Early Indian religious groups and Buddhists created cave sanctuaries as sacred spaces where the ultimate could be encountered. As Buddhism spread across India, Central Asia, and China, cave temples evolved architecturally in diverse forms but retained a common symbolism: its essential element was darkness. Sŏkkuram is the culmination of this long tradition. Its circular chamber, dome-like ceiling, and monumental Buddha create a unique sacred microcosm in which the Buddha appears as a transcendent being dwelling within a primordial space. Originally, its interior would have been largely dark, allowing the Buddha image to emerge only partially through artificial light. This dramatic interplay of darkness and revelation embodied the Buddhist idea that ultimate truth is hidden in the depths of the cosmos and the human mind, awaiting spiritual realization.
